The Cade Cowl
My last trip to Cades Cove, TN was filled with foggy mountains and dreary weather. It had a serene feeling, like a pause in time. The trees seemed misty and forgetful, like everything from the outside world had been forgotten. I’m not even quite sure the woods were aware that I was there. But it was a beautiful kind of forgetfulness, kind of like you’re walking half in a dream.
For this pattern, I wanted to incorporate that same feeling by capturing the softness of the mountains and keeping the color palette of the weather. I used City Tweed by Knit Picks in Coastal and Obsidian for my yarn. The alpaca merino mix gives warmth and comfort, while the added tweed gives an earthy feel to the pattern.

Hi, Brittany– I’m not sure how I got on your mailing list for your blog, but I’m very thankful I did! We live in Waynesville, NC, so not very far from Cades Cove, although we’ve never visited there. Your post with its beautiful photos makes me want to go! Within the last few years, we sold a hobby farm on which we had alpacas, a pony, chickens, bees and a garden. It was a magical time in my life! Now, at age 72, we have moved to the “city.” Although life is easier with less responsibilities, I do miss my furry friends! I, too, am a relatively new rigid heddle weaver, within the last couple of years. Handwoven has always called my name, and I’m finding rigid heddle weaving will be just fine for quite a long time! So much of your writing resonates with me— I love your knitting patterns, your weaving instructions, your photographs, and your philosophy! You are just beginning a wonderful adventure, it sounds like! So I wish you much success, happiness, and inspiration on your journey. Thank you for your blog and for somehow finding your way to my “inbox!”
Thank you so much for writing your sweet note!
You’ve been living my dream! Anything furry and warm has my heart. Growing up, my mama turned our half acre lot into as much as a farm as she could. We had Angora goats, chickens, rabbits, and ducks, with half of the yard being dedicated to gardening alone. Your life reminds me so much of a book I’ve been reading called Adventures in Understanding, by David Grayson. It’s about a farmer who had to move to the city and how he changed his perspective to see beauty where he is at. It’s a really good read if you ever need a book.
I am so glad that you enjoy my site! It really is encouraging to have such a kindred spirit for a reader.
Thanks again for writing,
Brittany Seaborg
